Prophecies on the Passion of Christ

Jesus Christ is revealed in every book of the Bible. The birth of Jesus, His life, the redemption of mankind by His death on the cross and the resurrection were all prophesied by the prophets in the Old Testament. Let us look into the various prophecies related to the Passion of Christ.

  • Messiah betrayed by Judas for 30 silver coins

Prophecy

“Even my bosom friend in whom I trusted,
who ate of my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” (Psalms 41: 9)

“So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.” And the Lord said to me, ‘Throw it to the potter’—the handsome price at which they valued me! “(Zechariah 11:12–13).

Fulfillment

Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. (John 13:26)

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money. So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.” (Matthew 27:6–10).

  • Messiah will be abandoned

Prophecy

“Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends—those who see me on the street flee from me” (Psalms 31:11)

Fulfillment

“And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.” And they all forsook him, and fled. Then everyone deserted him and fled” (Mark 14:48-50).

  • Messiah will be silent before His accusers

Prophecy

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth, like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)

Fulfillment

“When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, ‘Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?’ But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor” (Matthew 27:12–14)

  • Messiah will be mocked and spat on

Prophecy

The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. (Isaiah 50:5-6)

Fulfillment

“They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him” (Matthew 27:27–31).

  • Messiah’s hands and feet would be pierced

Prophecy

“Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet” (Psalms 22:16).

Fulfillment

“So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25)

  • Messiah will be crucified with criminals

Prophecy

“Because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”  (Isaiah 53:12)

Fulfillment

“Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.”(Mathew 27:38)

  • Messiah’s thirst will be quenched with vinegar and gall

Prophecy

“They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst” (Psalms 69:21).

Fulfillment

“There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it” (Matthew 27:34).

“After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said, “I thirst.” A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.”(John 19:28-29)

  • Soldiers will cast lots for Messiah’s clothing

Prophecy

“They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment” (Psalms 22:18).

Fulfillment

“When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get it.’ (John 19:23–24).

  • Jesus prays for His enemies

Prophecy

In return for my love they accuse me, even as I make prayer for them. (Psalms 109:4)

Fulfillment

And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

  • Messiah’s bones would not be broken and His side will be pierced

Prophecy

“It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones” (Exodus 12:46).

He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. (Psalms 34:20)

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born. (Zechariah 12:10)

Fulfillment

“But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water ” (John 19:31–36)

  • Messiah would be buried with the rich

Prophecy

And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. (Isaiah 53:9)

Fulfillment:

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. (Mathew 27:57-60)
